More than 25 million people in the European Union face nowadays fertility issues, while the male factor affects 40% of all cases.
European Fertility Week 2021 focuses on male infertility as well as the psychological burden associated with it.
Male fertility remains a major taboo in our society and men are often left out of the debate about their sexual and reproductive health.

Embryolab’s experts Dr. Nikos Christoforidis and Mrs. Alexia Chatziparasidou, on the occasion of the European Fertility Week, talk to us about male infertility:
“At this year’s European Fertility Week, the focus is on male fertility, an issue which concerns a significant number of men and couples who are trying to conceive.
Male infertility is responsible either alone or in combination with other fertility problems for 40-50% of all infertility cases.
Therefore, one understands the importance of timely awareness and adequate information to the public on issues related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of male infertility.
With the development of diagnostic methods, we can now gather a wealth of useful information both for the numerical data of the sperm, as well as for its function.
As diagnostic tests are developing at the molecular level at a rapid rate, we are now able to analyze the environment in which sperm grows and matures, while a new direction in the investigation of male fertility has been given by the analysis of the microbial population in sperm.
Finally, fertility preservation in men is particularly effective, the application of which allows men undergoing chemotherapy to cryopreserve sperm or testicular tissue for future use, which allows them to start a family through assisted reproduction therapy at a later stage.”
Dr. Nikos Christoforidis MD, MSc, FRCOG, Obstetrician-Gynecologist Surgeon, Scientific & Clinical Director of Embryolab, Co-Founder of Embryolab Academy.
“Fortunately, the time when the burden of infertility fell exclusively on the shoulders of women is long gone. Nowadays, the concept of male infertility is more familiar and less taboo. In addition, the modern men are more willing to accept their share of responsibility and take all the necessary tests to assess their fertility.
However, there is still a great lack of knowledge and information observed among young people of reproductive age about the factors that can affect a man’s fertility. That, in combination with the observed worldwide decline in male fertility levels, indicates the need for information and awareness of our young people even greater.
Well-designed information and awareness campaigns are more important than ever. All men of reproductive age as well as our adolescents should be aware of the factors that may affect their fertility and their ability to become parents. It is also very important to know when to turn to specialists in order to prevent unpleasant situations in time.
Knowledge is power! “Knowledge will empower men and help them make better decisions about protecting or maintaining their fertility.”
Mrs. Alexia Chatziparasidou MSc, PMI-RMP, Clinical Embryology Consultant, Director of Embryolab Academy, Co-Founder of Embryolab.
Thanks to the advances in the assisted reproduction and science, most couples experiencing male fertility nowadays, can hope to have their own biological child.
In the last 20 years, great progress has been made in the effectiveness of in vitro fertilization methods. Even in cases of azoospermia, the method of micro-fertilization using testicular sperm now leads to high rates of fertilization and healthy pregnancies.
The couple facing male infertility should not be disappointed. The experts will offer them the appropriate scientific guidance, all available options and the appropriate solution.
At Embryolab, leading doctors, embryologists, and scientists of various fields with great expertise and experience on fertility, work every day with great respect to the dream of people to become parents.
We change lives, we create families!
