Recently, WHO focused to reproductive health monitoring due to infertility increase. Infertility is a disease of the male or female reproductive system, defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. It can cause significant distress, stigma, and financial hardship, affecting people’s mental and psychosocial well-being.
On April 4th, 2023, the WHO published a new report which states that 17.5% of the adult population experiences infertility:meaning that 1 in 6 people worldwide will face some disorder in their reproductive health, which shows the urgent need for a high quality fertility care for those who need it.
Achilleas Papatheodorou, PhD, M.Med.Sc., Senior Clinical Embryologist (ESHRE cert.), Director of Embryolab Laboratories, comments on the occasion of the WHO announcement “Despite the magnitude of the issue,
solutions for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility, are available. Anyone facing infertility, whether alone or as a couple, should address to fertility specialists seeking for help and find the appropriate treatment. Today, more than ever, the science of Assisted Reproduction has a wide range tools to diagnose infertility and a range of personalized treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), that can provide solutions to different reproductive issues. Furthermore, Assisted Reproductive Technology has highlighted practices and techniques that can ensure preservation of male and female fertility such as egg and sperm cryopreservation.”
